Start with your label

This tool uses the U.S. Nutrition Facts format, where fiber is included in total carbohydrate. Enter both values in grams for one labeled serving.

Sugar alcohols (optional)

Enter the grams listed as Sugar Alcohol for the same serving. Do not include allulose or total sugars. If you choose a deduction, enter the stated sugar-alcohol amount; do not guess when it is missing. These percentages compare calculation methods, not how much your body absorbs.

If a labeled serving is 2 slices and you plan to eat 1, enter 0.5 servings.

Estimated net carbs per serving

Enter your values and select Calculate.

What your result includes

Estimated net carbs = total carbs − fiber − chosen sugar-alcohol deduction. We then multiply by the servings you plan to eat. The default does not deduct sugar alcohols. For example: 12 g total carbs minus 5 g fiber gives 7 g per serving; two servings give 14 g estimated net carbs and 24 g total carbs.

Net carbs has no standardized legal definition. This calculation does not predict your glucose response or determine whether a food fits your treatment plan. The American Diabetes Association recommends using total carbohydrate. Read the ADA explanation.

Questions about reading labels

How do I choose a sugar-alcohol deduction?

Compare subtracting none, half, or all of the listed grams. The result shows both the percentage and the grams deducted. With 20 g total carbs, 5 g fiber, and 6 g sugar alcohols, those methods give 15 g, 12 g, or 9 g. Absorption varies: subtracting 100% does not mean every sugar alcohol has no glucose effect. These options are calculation assumptions, not treatment recommendations.

What about allulose?

Allulose is not a sugar alcohol. U.S. labels include it in total carbohydrate, although it may be excluded from total and added sugars. This calculator does not deduct allulose. Read the FDA explanation.

Can I use labels from other countries?

Use this calculator only when fiber is included in the carbohydrate number you enter. If the label already excludes fiber from available carbohydrate, subtracting it again would give an incorrect result. Ask the manufacturer if the format is unclear.

Should I add sugars separately?

No. On a Nutrition Facts label, sugars are already included in total carbohydrate. Copy the total without adding sugars again. More about carb counting.

If you use insulin or a diabetes meal plan, follow the counting method agreed with your care team. Do not adjust doses using this result.
